Life Skills

Life Skills
Life Skills is the foundation of how we help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities move toward greater independence and dignity in daily living. Instead of doing everything for the person, we focus on what they can safely learn, and we build from there-step by step.

We begin with an individualized assessment that looks at strengths and needs across key areas: personal hygiene, dressing, basic cooking, home care, money handling, safety awareness, and community use. Together with families and agencies, we prioritize what will have the biggest impact on quality of life right now.

Training is always hands-on. That might mean practicing a simple breakfast recipe, learning how to sort laundry, using a checklist to clean a bedroom, or rehearsing what to do if someone knocks on the door. We use clear visual supports, repetition, and positive reinforcement so new skills stick, not just appear once.

For residents, progress can be as meaningful as brushing their teeth without reminders, choosing appropriate clothing for the weather, or helping prepare dinner. These wins build pride and self-respect. For families and organizations, stronger life skills often translate into fewer care hours, smoother routines, and more realistic long-term planning for supported or semi-independent living.

We also teach self-advocacy within life skills work: learning to ask for help appropriately, saying "no" when something feels unsafe, and communicating preferences. This makes everyday tasks safer and more respectful.

Life Skills is not a one-size-fits-all class. It is a practical, person-centered process that respects cultural preferences, family traditions, and individual pace. Over time, our goal is clear: to help each person do as much for themselves as possible, with the right support, so they can participate fully in their home and community.
