Problem Solving

Problem Solving
Problem Solving is our focused coaching service that helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities move from feeling stuck to feeling capable when everyday challenges come up. Instead of rushing in to fix things for them, we teach a repeatable process they can rely on.

We begin by learning how the person currently reacts when something goes wrong-shutting down, becoming frustrated, or acting impulsively. Then we introduce simple, visual steps: stop and breathe, define the problem, think of choices, weigh what might happen next, and choose a safe, realistic option.

Sessions often use real situations: a missed ride, a disagreement with a roommate, a broken device, or a change in schedule. We walk through what happened, explore different responses, and practice better options through role-play and guided discussion. This builds critical thinking in small, manageable pieces.

For residents, this coaching reduces anxiety because they know they have a plan when life doesn't go as expected. For families and agencies, stronger problem-solving skills mean fewer crises, more independent decision-making, and smoother days in the home or program.

We also coordinate with staff, sharing the language and visual supports we use so everyone can prompt the same process: "Let's name the problem," "What are two choices?" "What's the safest option?" That consistency helps new thinking patterns stick.

Over time, we see meaningful shifts-more asking for help before a situation explodes, more patience with delays, and more pride when individuals solve problems with less hands-on assistance. Our Problem Solving service gives people practical tools to handle real life, not just worksheets, building a stronger foundation for independence.
